AAU vs USD

November 17th, 2008 by Kevin Lawrence, Head Coach

Just a couple of notes….

Why are some of the THD divers joining AAU and some JO?  Well…number one, it’s cost.  USD charges a lot more of their insurance.  AAU is cheaper and easier to get.  If your diver is not a JO diver, then they should dive AAU.

What’s a JO diver?   A Junior Olympic Diver is a diver that has a competitive list that would enable them to go to the Regional Championships this spring.  Certain ages have certain dives.  For example, if you are 11 and under, you need to have 6 dives.  There are 5 categories in diving (front, back, inward, reverse, and twister).  A diver needs to learn dives in each of those categories in order to create a list.

Why does my kid to so many stupid jumps in practice you may ask?  Because they have to master the simple skills, and have it pounded in their head over and over and over and over (get the point) until they can add a dive to it.  Notice how well most of our beginners can do a front jump….but….as soon as you put a dive on it….bam.  They fly out to the middle of the pool.

Trust me, it looks easy…but it’s not….

Hmmm…..maybe we should have a parent practice when we have our Christmas party.  (Yes, I’m calling it Christmas).  Because….well…..I grew up with it Christmas and that’s what it is.  If that offends someone…well….life will go on huh?

The CHRISTMAS party details will come soon.  Let’s enjoy Thanksgiving first okay.  Actually, I think more people like Thanksgiving than Christmas anyway.

Once again, thanks for your continued support of THD.

Peace…

Kevin
